Arles signs Basinas, Charisteas

08/17/2010 - Avignon, France (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Promoted French Ligue 1 club Arles signed free agents Angelos Basinas and Angelos Charisteas on Monday, two players who helped Greece win Euro 2004.

Basinas and Charisteas are Arles' 15th and 16th summer signings, as the squad was rebuilt for its arrival in Ligue 1. The duo combined on the winning goal in the Euro final six years ago, with Charisteas heading home the winner in a 1-0 victory over Portugal.

Basinas, 34, is a holding midfielder who last played with English Premier club Portsmouth. Charisteas, 30, a striker or winger recently ended his contract at Bundesliga outfit Nuremberg. Both signed one-year deals, with options to stay with Arles if it avoids relegation.

"I don't know the French championship but I've played in England and in Spain and I've experienced a situation like Arles-Avignon's at Mallorca," Basinas said on the Ligue 1 website. "I'm coming to help and do everything for my team."
