Ellsbury was sidelined in the first week of the season after breaking several ribs, then returned after a month-long absence in late May and suffered another fractured rib making a diving catch against Philadelphia on May 23. He played the next game and went 0-for-5 before being put on the DL again.

The original injury, a hairline fracture in four of his left ribs, came when he collided with teammate Adrian Beltre going after a fly ball.

Ellsbury has played in only nine games this season, batting .250 with four doubles and three RBI. In his second full season last season, the 26-year-old speedster batted .301 with 94 runs scored and 70 stolen bases in 153 games.

To make room on the roster, the Sox optioned outfielder Daniel Nava to Triple- A Pawtucket.
